Even if they only played a small part in the film, anyone can serve as inspiration for blockbuster features, and Deadpool & Wolverine is a prime illustration of this. Although her onscreen time as Lady Deadpool in Deadpool Corps was brief, Ryan Reynolds's wife and actor Blake Lively had far-reaching effects on the Marvel film's climax.
Shawn Levy's commentary reveals Blake Lively's impact on the film
According to Games Radar, Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, revealed in his commentary that a single message from Lively prompted several retakes to ensure the ending had the appropriate level of dramatic impact.
Deadpool and Wolverine had already rescued the day by defeating the Time Ripper in the third act's climax, and they were shown to have survived right after. Nevertheless, in the edited version—the one we saw in theatres—the spectator remains uncertain about the fate of the couple as Paradox, played by Matthew Macfadyen, passionately spews hate speech toward B-15, played by Wounmi Mosaku. Deadpool and Wolverine reappear to interrupt Paradox as the Goo Goo Dolls circle around Iris.
Reynolds is proud that they did only a day and a half of movie reshoots. Usually, films like these undergo weeks of reshooting, and one of the parts they reshot was Matthew's speech, emphasising, "He is miraculous."
Blake Lively's contribution leads to a more satisfying payoff
Levy also mentioned giving credit where it is due. Earlier, when the power room exploded and their heroes survived, there was no tension. "You know, I've been with you this whole movie," Lively reassured them, adding that they're lost—something she wants to sit in fear of. The actor also said, "Let me be in that place of suspense so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral."
According to Levy, Lively's comment really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie, which is why they decided to reshoot it. Here, the payoff is much more satisfying.
