The way the world has embraced Deadpool & Wolverine is astounding, as the movie heads towards a worldwide box office collection of a billion dollars. The film has turned out to be a wild ride, fueled in part by the numerous cameos that have made it even bigger. Among the most notable were Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, which came as the biggest surprise of the film, and the long-rumored but still unexpected appearance of Henry Cavill as a Wolverine variant in a parallel universe. The former Superman actor had long been speculated to play the part, and he finally did. However, did you know that playing Logan posed a health risk for the star?

Henry Cavill Fell Sick Smoking Cigars

For those who may not know, in Deadpool & Wolverine, Wade Wilson is on a quest to find a Logan variant to serve as the anchor being of his universe, Earth-10005. His search leads him to several locations, one of which is a garage. Here, a muscular man is seen repairing his bike while smoking a cigar. When he turns around, it's revealed to be Henry Cavill. The visuals are still fresh in the minds of viewers, and the world is still reeling from the surprise. However, the very cigar you see in the frame posed a significant challenge for Cavill, as he smoked it for eight hours straight during filming, which turned out to be detrimental to his health.

According to a report by Screen Rant, Henry Cavill was highly dedicated to playing the Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine. Director Shawn Levy revealed that the actor smoked cigars for eight hours straight to play the part, which resulted in him falling severely ill the next day. Despite this, Cavill never once wavered in his commitment. "[Henry] not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day. I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver," Shawn said.

Shawn Levy on Casting Henry Cavill

For those unaware, rumors about Henry Cavill playing a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine circulated throughout the production. This was also around the time when Cavill had just been shown the door at the DCU, where he was set to reprise his role as Superman. The situation created significant buzz around the actor, who then appeared on the Marvel Cinematic Universe red carpet. Shawn Levy saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring him into the Marvel fold.

"In the case of Henry, it was not long after everything went down with DC and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman. Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to first of all cast Henry Cavill in a part that he would kick ass at, but also to poke fun at that other comic-book-founded movie studio and play with some self-awareness there," Shawn Levy explained.
