Malayalam actor Asif Ali appears poised for another major success following his previous hit, Kishkindha Kaandam, released last year. His new film, Rekhachithram, featuring Anaswara Rajan in a leading role, has made an impressive debut at the Kerala box office, generating Rs 2 Crore on its opening day, according to industry analysts at Sacnilk.
Directed by Jofin T Chacko, known for The Priest, this mystery-thriller centres on an investigation into a body that was interred nearly four decades ago, with the last known sighting of the prime suspect occurring on the set of Mammootty’s Kaathodu Kaathoram in 1985.
Rekhachithram Day 1 box office collection trumps Marco and Identity
According to the ticketing platform Book My Show, the film recorded nearly 79,000 bookings on Thursday, a regular working day. Encouraged by predominantly favourable reviews, the movie is anticipated to achieve significant success over the weekend, potentially surpassing Rs 10 crore in the Indian market by the conclusion of Sunday.
The only other notable Malayalam films currently in theatres are Unni Mukundan’s Marco and Tovino Thomas’ Identity; however, based on the recent box office trends, they are unlikely to challenge the film's performance. Additionally, Shankar and Ram Charan’s Game Changer, along with Arjun Ashokan and Anaswara’s Ennu Swantham Punyalan, are among the other new releases available in cinemas.
Does Rekhachithram have Mammootty in it?
The film's flashback sequences centred on Anaswara Rajan's character Rekha, take place in the 1980s, primarily on the sets of Bharathan's Kaathodu Kaathoram, featuring Mammootty. This production includes numerous unexpected cameos from various legends, serving as a fitting homage to the 1980s, a remarkable era for Malayalam cinema. Additionally, the cast includes notable actors such as Siddique, Zarin Shihab, Jagadeesh, and Sreekanth Murali.
