Daveed's storyline

Antony Varghese takes on the role of Ashiq Abu, a bouncer for celebrities who occasionally loses his cool. In a moment of anger, he strikes a well-known Turkish boxer, leading to a challenge for a match in the ring. This creates the backdrop for a sports drama. However, Govind Vishnu's film aims to delve deeper, adding a heartfelt emotional aspect by examining the bond between a father and daughter.

While you wait for Daveed, be sure to check out other fantastic boxing movies like Mukkabaaz and Saala Khadoos on OTTplay Premium.

Timeless story of the underdog

In Daveed, we witness a classic David and Goliath story as Aashiq Abu, who essentially resides in a slum with his wife and daughter, faces off against a world-class champion boxer. This legendary narrative gets a fresh Malayalam twist, transporting us through the tight alleys of Fort Kochi and even into a boxing village.

Exciting sports excitement

The story centers on Abu, a former boxer, and Daveed showcases a bunch of thrilling action scenes where champions go head-to-head in the ring. The film shines with its expertly choreographed and edited fight sequences, complemented by strong performances from Antony Varghese and Mo Ismail.

Antony Varghese along with the rest of the cast from Daveed

Antony Varghese really brings Daveed to life, nailing both the action and emotional scenes. He’s put in a lot of effort to make sure every detail shines, including getting in shape, which is key for a boxing movie. Lijomol Jose also shines in her role as Abu’s wife. The film features solid support from Saiju Kurup, Vijayaraghavan, and Jess Kukku.

The technical team deserves a shout-out too, with Justin Varghese’s captivating music, Rakesh Cherumadam's sharp editing, and Salu K. Thomas' smooth cinematography all contributing to an enjoyable viewing experience.

That said, Daveed does have its flaws and could have been even better. Still, this Malayalam sports drama is definitely worth checking out when it hits OTT this weekend.
