Choo Mantar Arrives on OTT – A Hilarious Horror Ride with Sharan

The announcement of a collaboration between Sharan and the relatively new filmmaker Navaneeth, who has directed only two films, generated considerable excitement among viewers. Navaneeth gained recognition for his successful horror film Karvva, yet his previous works did not prominently feature comedic elements. Sharan, known for his willingness to explore various genres as long as they incorporate sufficient humor for his primary audience, raised curiosity about how Navaneeth would blend their distinct filmmaking styles and effectively combine horror with comedy.

The final product, Choo Mantar, was released for Sankranti this year and notably focused more on supernatural themes and jump scares rather than humor. Comedy was primarily provided by Chikkanna during the few moments when the film adopted a lighter tone. Nevertheless, this combination resonated with audiences, resulting in a successful theatrical release for Choo Mantar. After a 50-day run in theaters, during which it reportedly earned between Rs 5-6 crore, the film is now available on OTT platforms. As of March 28, 2025, Choo Mantar can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
A significant attraction of Navaneeth’s film was its connection to another well-known franchise—the Apthamitra series—suggesting that Sharan’s mentor in all matters paranormal was Dr. Vijay (the late Dr. Vishnuvardhana). The storyline unfolds across multiple timelines, featuring Sharan as Dynamo, an exorcism expert summoned to address the supernatural events at Morgan House, a mansion claimed to be haunted, which an NRI family inherits and moves into. While Dynamo investigates the mansion's history and the identities of the possessed, he struggles to manage the situation effectively.

Years later, his son, Gowtham (also known as Sharan), returns to Morgan House, this time under the guise of a different mission: to discover a concealed treasure and unravel the secrets of the mansion. The film "Choo Mantar" features a cast that includes Chikkanna, Aditi Prabhudeva, Meghana Gaonkar, Prabhu Mundkur, Dharma, Gurukiran, Rajani Bharadwaj, Vijay Chendoor, and others.
