This New Year, movie lovers in the Telugu states are in for a treat with everything from re-releases of classic hits to dubbed versions of the newest films. Whether you're into sports dramas, action-packed thrillers, or what’s being called one of India’s most intense movies, there’s plenty to satisfy your cinematic cravings.
Marco
Haneef Adeni’s latest film, Marco, featuring Unni Mukundan, hit theaters in Malayalam on December 20 and totally wowed audiences. For those who prefer not to deal with subtitles, it’s set to release in Telugu on January 1. The movie, which also stars Siddique, Jagadish, Abhimanyu S Thilakan, Kabir Duhan Singh, Anson Paul, and Yukti Tareja, revolves around a gangster who rules over Kerala’s gold mafia. Alongside Animal and Kill, it’s being called one of the most intense films in India.
Guntur Kaaram
Trivikram Srinivas’ Guntur Kaaram hit theaters back in January, but a lot of folks think it didn’t get the recognition it deserved due to poor marketing. Now, the film featuring Mahesh Babu, Ramya Krishnan, and Prakash Raj is getting a second shot with a limited release in Hyderabad on December 31. What’s cool is that the tickets flew off the shelves in just minutes, even though it’s already streaming on OTT. The plot revolves around a mother and son who have drifted apart, with the son trying to mend their relationship.
Hitler
Muthyala Subbaiah’s 1997 movie Hitler is a standout in Chiranjeevi’s collection. It’s a remake of a 1996 Malayalam film with the same title, and it tells the tale of a brother who’s super protective of his five sisters. When it hit theaters, it was a huge success, giving the actor a much-needed boost. It’s set to hit theaters again on January 1.
Sye
Back in 2004, SS Rajamouli dropped Sye, and it was a game-changer for Telugu cinema. The movie features Nithin, Genelia Deshmukh, Shashank, and Pradeep Rawat in the main roles. It revolves around two rival student groups who come together to protect their college grounds from a gangster by organizing a rugby match. The soundtrack by MM Keeravaani was a huge success when it came out.
Oy!
Anand Ranga’s 2009 romantic drama Oy! is a nostalgic favorite for many kids who grew up in the 90s. Featuring Siddharth and Shamlee, the film follows a guy deeply in love who sets out to help his ailing girlfriend tick off her bucket list before time runs out. The music by Yuvan Shankar Raja adds that perfect touch to the whole experience.
