The OTT debut of Umbarro, streaming solely on ShemarooMe (OTTPlay Premium) starting April 24, 2025, has brought about an abundance of joy, transformation, and heartfelt stories. Umbarro (translating to "threshold") is a Gujarati comedy-drama helmed by National Award-winning director Abhishek Shah. It chronicles the experiences of seven women embarking on their inaugural overseas journey to London, resulting in an extraordinary adventure. What begins as a sightseeing excursion evolves into an inspiring quest for self-discovery as the women confront their fears, societal norms, and boundaries, ultimately uncovering courage, joy, and autonomy in their distinct ways.

Umbarro: Themes of empowerment and exploration

Delving into themes of empowerment, camaraderie, and personal development, the film highlights Shah's signature sensitivity and perspective. Besides offering a charming setting, the unfamiliar streets of London represent the protagonists' inner journeys.

Discussing his vision for the film, Shah shared that following his direction and production of Hellaro, a film that addressed self-expression and amplified the voices of the unheard—he continued, as a producer, to develop Kamthaan, a narrative that examined the struggle between the powerful and the powerless. As a director, he then sought to produce a comedic tale with a serious underlying message: the importance of embracing diversity. In Umbarro, Shah intended to explore that pivotal moment in people's lives when they must make a choice, regardless of how significant or minor, to move forward. All of these films, in their respective manners, investigate themes of silence, adversity, and ultimately, the empowerment that arises from voicing one's thoughts. In the end, what truly matters is the pleasure gained from these experiences.

Star-studded ensemble cast

The ensemble cast features a remarkable lineup of actors and actresses, including Sanjay Galsar and Aarjav Trivedi, alongside Deeksha Joshi, Kaajal Oza Vaidya, Sucheeta Trivedi, Tarjanee Bhadla, Tejal Panchasara, and Vineeta Joshee.

Umbarro offered seasoned actress Vandana Pathak a unique opportunity to portray a character with deep emotional and experiential connections. Her character Seema Patel resonated with many women around her—mothers, aunts, neighbors—who have dedicated their entire lives to caregiving, often neglecting their own aspirations. Umbarro granted her the chance to honor these women. This is beyond a film; it’s a reflection, a gentle reminder that one can always make their own choices.

Simultaneously, working on Umbarro was therapeutic for Joshi, who plays the introspective Anvesha. After the film, she returned to her journaling habits. Anvesha is going through an emotional turmoil due to her lack of courage to confront her deepest fear. Her character’s cheerful demeanor is an unconscious attempt to mask her shyness. It’s rare to encounter scripts that allow a woman’s journey to unfold smoothly and authentically. Joshi believes this film will motivate numerous women to embark on something new, whether it’s healing, traveling, or embracing themselves.

Feel-good film

Umbarro offers a distinct cinematic adventure with its vibrant blend of humor, emotion, and optimism, and it is certain to attract women and viewers of every age.
