Following the events of Deadpool and Wolverine, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is poised for a return with the narrative of Sam Wilson's transformation into Captain America in the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World. This marks the 35th instalment in the MCU and will continue the storyline established in the 2021 miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The film is being produced by Marvel Studios and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, serving as the fourth entry in the Captain America franchise. Julius Onah is directing, with the screenplay credited to Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Onah, and Peter Glanz.

The cast includes Danny Ramirez, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Anthony Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson/Captain America.

Captain America: Brave New World storyline and conflict

Superhero Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, has formally become Captain America. Sam finds himself embroiled in a global crisis after meeting the newly inaugurated U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). He needs to figure out why there's a sinister worldwide scheme before the real villain makes everyone mad.

In the role of Sam Wilson/Captain America, Anthony Mackie plays a veteran pararescueman and current Avenger. Due to his lack of Steve Rogers's powers and allies, Wilson's Captain America, according to producer Nate Moore, is an underdog like Rocky Balboa from the Rocky film series. After claiming the mantle without assistance, he must earn it.

Onah predicts that Wilson will take the lead as Captain America. According to Mackie, his character would have a different perspective on good and evil and not be a judgemental Captain America. Wilson "levels the playing field" in battles by donning Captain America's vibranium shield and wingsuit because he is not a super soldier like Rogers.

Harrison Ford portrays Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" U.S. President-elect Ross in the film. The character of Red Hulk seeks to establish a collaboration with Captain America. Ford, utilizing motion capture technology, brings the Red Hulk to life, while Ross, who has previously served as a U.S. Army general and U.S. Secretary of State within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, experiences a significant transformation throughout the narrative. Moore indicated that the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) would create "natural sparks" between Wilson and Ross; however, producer Kevin Feige noted that their relationship has evolved now that they occupy the roles of Captain America and President, respectively.

Given Ross's history as a pursuer of Bruce Banner/Hulk, Marvel Studios expressed enthusiasm for his evolution into Red Hulk. Moore remarked that transforming a character who once hunted Hulks into a Hulk himself transcends the role of mere antagonist, rendering him a tragic figure.

Following the passing of William Hurt in March 2022, Ford assumed the role of Ross within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hurt portrayed the character from 2008 to 2021 and had expressed a desire to see Ross become Red Hulk before his unexpected death, as Marvel Studios had communicated their intentions to him.

Legacy of Captain America in the MCU

After the events depicted in Captain America: Civil War (2016), which marked the conclusion of the Captain America trilogy featuring Chris Evans in the role of Steve Rogers, Wilson takes on the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

As a component of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to premiere in theatres worldwide on February 14, 2025, with a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes.
