Even with the Multiverse Saga introducing endless possibilities, new challenges, a plethora of brand-new comic characters, a wide array of stories, and a range of storytellers, the world is still not over the fact that we may rarely see the original Avengers reunite on screen after Avengers: Endgame. Fans have been hooked on every possible update about Avengers: Secret Wars, which hints at an epic reunion of the beloved Marvel A-team that dominated screens for more than a decade and a half. Since this upcoming film is the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, it might be the closest we get to a reunion. Recently, there were rumors that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could reunite for a Disney+ Hotstar series, but it seems that this isn’t happening—at least not right now, according to Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum.
Can the Avengers Assemble for a Disney+ Series?
For those unfamiliar, it was rumored that the original Avengers, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and more, could reunite in a Disney+ series. While Disney has found great success with streaming hits like Echo and X-Men ‘97, many hoped that this would extend to an Avengers reunion on the platform. However, Winderbaum has stated that this is not currently possible.
"I think the Avengers are about... there came a day when Earth's Mightiest Heroes had to assemble," Winderbaum told Cinemablend. "In a feature film, which is a statement piece, it makes sense that there's an event that galvanizes them all. I think that in a long-form television show, it becomes more of a challenge to have, 'There came a day' every day. In the comics, you can do it. It's the Marvel universe, and there are just spectacular things happening all the time." He added, "But if you read the comics, you know that the Avengers really assemble so that they can disassemble, and then assemble again, and then disassemble again. Is it possible? Yes."
It would indeed be an expensive endeavor for Marvel to bring the Avengers together for a TV show. The studio would likely prefer to use this opportunity to draw audiences back to the big screen, where they could capitalize on the excitement. "But from a narrative point of view, it becomes like ascension and descension, which... could be really interesting for a long-form story. But it would be a very unique pattern for a television show," Winderbaum concluded.
Meanwhile, when asked about Avengers: Secret Wars (aka Avengers 6), Winderbaum praised the story. He described it as an amazing culmination of the Multiverse Saga, one that will make the entire journey feel worthwhile.
