Breaking: Kangana Ranaut's Movie May Skip Release in Punjab

Kangana Ranaut's highly anticipated film Emergency is scheduled to premiere in theatres tomorrow, January 17, 2025. Following a series of controversies and numerous postponements, the film is finally poised for release. However, it appears that additional challenges remain for the directorial debut of Kangana Ranaut. On Thursday, January 16, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee urged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to prohibit the screening of Emergency within the state. The reasons for this request are as follows.

Kangana Ranaut's Emergency to be banned in Punjab?

In the film, Kangana will be seen portraying the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It will showcase the 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977. Just a day before its release, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann demanding a ban on the movie. In his letter, he claimed that the film has 'an anti-Sikh agenda to spread hatred against the community.'

The letter states that the film produced by the BJP Member of Parliament portrays the 1984 assaults on revered Sikh sites, including Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and other significant locations, alongside the Sikh genocide and ethnic cleansing. It argues that the film distorts the truth and promotes an anti-Sikh agenda aimed at inciting animosity towards the Sikh community. Additionally, the film is said to tarnish the reputation of the Sikh martyr Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale.

Furthermore, the letter indicates that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has previously lodged objections regarding the film with the Chief Secretary of Punjab but has expressed dissatisfaction with the government's inaction. The SGPC has also reached out to all Deputy Commissioners in Punjab, requesting them to halt the film's screening.

The SGPC President also said that if Kangana's film is released, it will 'evoke anger and protests within the Sikh community.' He further warned, "The Punjab government must take responsibility to ensure the movie is not released in the state. Otherwise, the SGPC will be compelled to launch strong protests across Punjab."
