Rekhachithram, featuring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, has wowed viewers and become the first big hit in Malayalam for 2025. Even though the mystery thriller experienced a drop in earnings on its 12th day, it still raked in about Rs 42.15 crore globally, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. Here’s a breakdown of Rekhachithram’s box office performance.:

Rekhachithram BO Collection on the 12th day

Rekhachithram experienced a drop in earnings on its second Monday, pulling in Rs 0.5 crore. This dip might be due to it being a weekday, especially since the film raked in Rs 1.85 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.55 crore on Sunday.

So far, the total gross collection in India stands at 25.15 crore, with an additional Rs 17 crore from overseas, bringing the worldwide total to 42.15 crore.  

Rivalry with other Malayalam movies

Rekhachithram, which premiered on January 9, 2025, is pretty much dominating the Malayalam box office this year, with no other releases really giving it a run for its money. Tovino Thomas’ film Identity, the first big Malayalam release of the year, has raked in about Rs 16.49 crore, putting it in second place behind Rekhachithram. Then there's Pravinkoodu Shappu, featuring Basil Joseph, which came out on January 16, 2025, but only managed to pull in Rs 4.02 crore amid mixed reviews. Interestingly, Marco, released during Christmas 2024, has already grossed Rs 115 crore and is still showing in theaters.

Looking ahead, the next big Malayalam film is Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, starring Mammootty alongside Gokul Suresh. There's a lot of buzz around this one since it marks Gautham Vasudev Menon's first time directing a Malayalam film. It’s set to hit theaters on January 23, 2025. 

The storyline of Rekhachithram

Rekhachithram has an interesting tie to Mammootty. The film's director, Jofin T Chacko, has cleverly connected it to the megastar's classic 1985 movie, Kaathodu Kaathoram. In the film, the main character, a cop named Vivek, portrayed by Asif Ali, is on the hunt for a woman who disappeared from a movie set forty years back.

This connection adds a fascinating twist to the story, and audiences in Kerala are really enjoying it for its gripping narrative and outstanding performances.
