As 2024 comes to an end, the film industry can finally exhale with relief. This year marked a revival of cinemas globally, with a greater number of films achieving box office success compared to prior years. The total ticket sales and audience attendance experienced an increase in most significant markets, with seven films surpassing the $500 million mark in global earnings. Notably, one of these films reached an impressive $1.7 billion in worldwide revenue, securing a place among the top 10 highest-grossing films in history, and it is not one of the typical contenders.
The film that achieved the highest box office revenue in 2024
At the start of the year, there was considerable speculation regarding which film would emerge as the highest-grossing of the year, with titles such as Joker: Folie à Deux, The Gladiator 2, Dune Part Two, and Deadpool & Wolverine being prominent contenders. Each of these films was a legacy sequel to a successful blockbuster and generated significant anticipation. With the exception of Joker 2, all of these films achieved commercial success. Notably, Deadpool & Wolverine surpassed the billion-dollar mark, establishing itself as the highest-grossing live-action film of the year. However, it was ultimately surpassed by Pixar's animated feature, Inside Out 2. Kelsey Mann's directorial debut proved to be a tremendous success, earning $1.698 billion worldwide. This film not only stands as the highest-grossing film of 2024 but also holds the record for the highest-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing the previous record set by The Lion King. The film features a modest yet talented voice cast, including Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser.
The superheroes and cosmic narratives that Inside Out 2 surpassed
Marvel-Sony delivered their most successful films this year with Deadpool & Wolverine and Venom: The Last Dance. Deadpool 3 emerged as a blockbuster, grossing $1.338 billion globally, while Venom 3 achieved a total of $475 million. Positioned between these two were several notable films: the Chinese sensation YOLO ($480 million), the monsterverse entry Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($571 million), the spinoff of The Wizard of Oz, Wicked ($585 million), and Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two ($714 million). Additionally, three animated films made significant earnings: Kung Fu Panda 4 ($547 million), Moana 2 ($821 million and still accumulating), and Despicable Me 4 ($969 million).
Notably, all of the year's top ten highest-grossing films were sequels, remakes, or spinoffs of previous titles, marking it as a year dominated by franchises. The highest-grossing Indian film of the year, Pushpa 2: The Rule, did not rank within the top 10 or even the top 20, having garnered just over $200 million, placing it at the 21st position, just behind Joker: Folie à Deux ($206 million) and The Garfield Movie ($234 million).
