Those eagerly anticipating Bong Joon Ho's return to the big screen following Parasite will have to be patient. Warner Bros. has moved the release date of the science fiction film Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson from January 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025, a three-month delay.
IMAX availability and Easter time boost for Mickey 17
As per Variety, this new release date will allow the film to play in IMAX, which should increase its chances of drawing in viewers over the Easter break. Warner Bros. shifted the release date of Antoine Fuqua's planned Michael Jackson biopic Michael from April 18 to October 3, following Lionsgate's decision to postpone the film until that date earlier this week.
A representative from Warner Bros. stated that when the April 18 date became available, they quickly moved to secure it for Mickey 17, explaining the studio's decision. The new date is great, and they're thrilled the film will be in IMAX.
Multiple delays for Mickey 17
Originally scheduled for January 10—three weeks before Mickey 17—Warner Bros. and New Line's Companion will now take its place. The Warner Bros. representative expressed their happiness at the decision to release Companion on this new date, highlighting its availability on January 31 with a complete IMAX footprint.
Mickey 17, originally slated for March 29, 2024, has experienced multiple delays. The original reason for the project's postponement to 2025, according to Variety's sources, was to give workers more time to complete it after strikes and other production delays last year.
However, according to studio insiders, the decision to move the release date to April was a show of support for director Bong after the excellent reception of the film's first teaser in September.
Synopsis and cast of Mickey 17
This science fiction thriller, starring Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a character who is expendable, is based on Edward Ashton's 2022 book of the same name. The book dispatches Mickey on perilous missions to colonize an ice planet. Every time a Mickey character dies, a copy takes his place. This copy has most of Mickey's memories. The ensemble also features Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun.
