Basil Joseph's new film Ponman might not be grabbing headlines like some of the bigger Malayalam films released recently, but it's definitely winning over audiences. Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap, a known fan of South Indian cinema, is the latest to sing its praises.

In a recent social media post, Kashyap, who also starred in the Malayalam film Rifle Club now available on Netflix and produced Manju Warrier’s Footage last year, had nothing but good things to say about Ponman, directed by art director-turned-filmmaker Jothish Sankar.

Anurag shared his thoughts on the drama-thriller inspired by GR Indugopan’s novella Nalanju Cheruppakaar in a social media post, saying, “It’s super original and a blast to watch. Basil Joseph is definitely one of the coolest everyday actors out there. I really enjoyed it.”

Basil has received praise for his role as PP Ajesh, a gold lender who prioritizes his principles above all else. The film, featuring Lijomol Jose, Anand Manmadhan, and Sajin Gopu in key roles, premiered in theaters on January 30.

Set in Kollam, the story follows the aftermath of Ajesh lending 25 sovereigns of gold to Steffi Graf and her brother Terrance Bruno’s family, who fail to repay the full amount. Ajesh then embarks on a journey to track down the bride and her tough husband, Mariyano, in a rough village to reclaim what he’s owed.

Ponman strikes gold at the box office

Ponman may not have hit the jackpot at the box office like some recent Malayalam flicks like Marco or Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram, but it still pulled in a respectable Rs 5.23 Cr in its first week in Indian theaters.

Starting this week, it’s going to face some tough competition from Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi and Joju George and Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Narayaneente Moonnaanmakkal.
