Amal Neerad, the cinematographer-filmmaker made his directorial debut in 2007, with the Mammootty starrer, Big B. The neo-noir action film, which pushed the creative and technical boundaries of Malayalam cinema, earned immense love from fans. Later in 2017, Amal Neerad announced a sequel to Big B, titled Bilal. Even though the movie started rolling just before the pandemic, it was later put on the back burner due to various undisclosed reasons. However, a new update on Bilal has now left the cinephiles excited.
Amal Neerad is working on Bilal, reveals Joseph Nellikkal
In a recent interview with Club FM, senior art director Joseph Nellikal, who is expected to collaborate with director Amal Neerad for Bilal, dropped a major update on the film. Interestingly, the senior technician confirmed that the Mammootty starrer is not shelved, and is very much on cards. Joseph Nellikal confirmed that the Bougainvillea director has resumed working on Bilal, and the project might materialize soon after Mammootty’s next outing with director Mahesh Narayanan.
However, when he was asked about the story and other details of Bilal, the art director refrained from making further revelations. But, it is now safe to assume that Amal Neerad and his team are reworking the script of the upcoming Mammootty starrer, to make it more appropriate for the current times. Earlier, it was rumoured that the storyline of the Big B sequel has been changed, according to the new developments in both Malayalam cinema and audiences’ tastes, that happened after the pandemic.
Along with Mammootty, the original star cast of Big B, including Manoj K Jayan, Mamta Mohandas, Bala, Maniyanpilla Raju, Lena, Jaffer Idukki, and others are expected to reprise their respective roles in Bilal. A popular young star, and a few other talented actors are expected join the additional star cast. If you wish to revisit Big B, the Amal Neerad directorial is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The Telugu dubbed version of the Mammootty starrer can be streamed on both Zee5 and OTTplay Premium.
