A couple of years before he came to be known as Mufti maker, director Narthan was an assistant on Prashanth Neel’s set of Ugramm. Narthan holds his mentor in high esteem and discussed aspects of his new film Bhairathi Ranagal with him. Does the KGF and Salaar maker also qualify as Narthan’s favourite filmmaker? Well, he does feature on the list, but doesn’t top it, it turns out.
Narthan's favourite director is...
Speaking to Guarantee News, the filmmaker said that it was difficult to name one particular director as an outright inspiration and that he could come up with one each for specific genres. “It all depends on how effectively a filmmaker delivers a certain subject. Take, for instance, Gladiator director Ridley Scott; he’s phenomenal in portraying drama. Mel Gibson’s strength is his play with emotions and its break down. In that vein, I have a favourite for specific genres, like, say, SS Rajamouli sir, Prashanth sir and Bala sir. But if I were to pick one as my favourite, I’d go with Mel Gibson,” says Narthan.
The director, who is currently basking in the success of Bhairathi Ranagal, has announced that his next will be a collaboration with KVN Productions, although the cast and other details have not been revealed. There are rumours that he could be directing a big superstar from the Tamil or Telugu film industry, but Narthan remains non-committal, saying it was up to the production house to freeze the cast.
As for collaborating with Rocking Star Yash, Narthan was, for the longest, supposed to be working on the actor’s 19th film, an opportunity that ich eventually went to Geethu Mohandas and her movie, Toxic. Addressing queries if he will ever do a film with Yash, Narthan keeps hopes alive, although he says that it will only be after the actor completes his current commitments with Toxic and Ramayana.
