Bengaluru Priest Crafts World’s First AI-Driven Kannada Film on ₹10 Lakh Budget in Just Six Month

A priest from Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, Karnataka, has surprised the Kannada film industry by creating a movie on a tight budget and schedule, without any actors, musicians, or crew. Narasimha Murthy utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) to realize the story he envisioned. Here’s the scoop on how he produced Sandalwood's first AI-generated film.
An AI-generated Kannada movie
Narasimha teamed up with Nuthan, a graphic designer who switched to AI tech, to make his dream project a reality. This 95-minute Kannada film has received a U/A certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), marking a significant achievement for AI-generated movies in India. The pair handled everything from the cast to the music and visuals, even incorporating drone footage. They utilized thirty different AI tools to finish 'Love You' in just six months, with a budget of ₹10 lakh, primarily spent on software licenses.
How did he manage that?
Narasimha chatted with TOI, sharing his ambition to create and release the 'world's first AI feature film' in theaters. He aims to show it on a single screen to break a record. The film features 12 original songs and dialogues generated by AI, although he did write some of the lyrics and dialogues himself. However, despite his assertion, Love You isn't actually the first AI-generated movie, as Where The Robots Grow was already released in 2024.
He mentioned that the CBFC had some feedback, saying, 'Even the regional censor officer noticed some inconsistencies in the characters from one scene to another. It was tough to create emotional expressions, and the lip-syncing wasn't great.' Still, they appreciated the film's ambition and creativity. Nuthan pointed out how quickly AI tech is evolving, saying, 'The tools we used are already outdated by six months. If we were to make the same film now, it would be way better.' Narasimha is also working on two more AI-driven projects about Bengaluru's founder, Kempe Gowda, and the historical figure Immadi Pulikeshi.
