During the promotional activities for Kranti, Challenging Star Darshan was frequently inquired about his plans to undertake more performance-driven roles similar to that of Namma Preethiya Ramu. He subsequently took on the project Kaatera, which was celebrated as a film that marked the resurgence of Darshan as an actor rather than merely a star. While Namma Preethiya Ramu is regarded as one of his finest performances, it is noteworthy that the film did not achieve commercial success.

Directed by the pair Sanjay and Vijay, Namma Preethiya Ramu is a remake of the acclaimed Malayalam film Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum, which featured the late Kalabhavan Mani. In this adaptation, Darshan portrays a visually impaired singer. Originally released in 2003, the film is now scheduled for a re-release. Namma Preethiya Ramu will be part of the lineup of films debuting in theatres on February 14, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.

The film showcases music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, predominantly featuring melodies adapted from the Tamil remake of Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum, titled Kasi. The cast includes Darshan alongside Navya Natarajan, Hamsavijetha, Doddanna, Umashree, Karibasavaiah, Pavithra Lokesh, Ramesh Pandith, Shyam Yadav, Nandini, and others.

Namma Preethiya Ramu centres on the protagonist Ramu, a blind singer who serves as the primary provider for his family. A local landlord offers to assist Ramu in obtaining surgery to regain his sight; however, the landlord harbours ulterior motives, leading to a tragic outcome for Ramu and his loved ones.

Upon the film's release, critics collectively lauded Darshan's performance, even though Namma Preethiya Ramu is a remake and he had Kalabhavan Mani's portrayal as a benchmark. Kalabhavan Mani received a Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards for his portrayal of Ramu.
