Tamil filmmaker and occasional actor Gautham Vasudev Menon has been making waves in the Kerala media since the start of the year. He first gained attention as the director of Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s latest home production, "Dominic and the Ladies Purse," and then as an actor in the Vishu release "Bazooka." The filmmaker, who made his mark with Minnale and has directed notable films like Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Khaka Khaka, Vaaranam Aayiram, and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, has often appeared in cameos or more significant roles in his own projects. However, over the past 6-7 years, he has shifted his focus primarily to acting, featuring in films like Sita Ramam, Michael, Leo, and Hitler.

This week, he’s taking on a significant acting role in one of the major Vishu releases, Bazooka. During the promotional activities, Gautham shared insights about his journey as a filmmaker and his goals. In a conversation with Cue Studio, he mentioned that the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry have never been his priority; instead, he aims to create a body of work that resonates with audiences and serves as a strong foundation for his future films.

During my journey, I’ve never chased fame or popularity; honestly, that thought doesn’t even cross my mind. I don’t come from a film family, and if you look online, you won’t find any of my relatives at film events or public appearances. I’m not against the glitz and glamour of showbiz, but that’s just not us. My goal has always been to build a brand that people recognize and want to see in theaters. That’s really important and beneficial for the film, he shares.

Gautham goes on to elaborate that if he were to work with a non-star actor, he would want audiences to show up because of his previous projects. That’s what motivates him, he explains, noting that while he doesn’t intentionally avoid the spotlight, it’s simply part of who he is.
