Director and actor Basil Joesph, known for his performance in the critically acclaimed film Sookshmadarshini last year, has commenced his 2025 journey with the Malayalam movie Praavinkoodu Shappu, which has also garnered positive reviews since its release.

Basil Joesph draws inspiration from the Singam character for Praavinkoodu Shappu

Basil Joesph, both an actor and director, has impressed audiences with his diverse roles. Following the success of Sookshmadarshini, in which he starred alongside Nazriya Fahadh, Basil returns with Praavinkoodu Shappu, a Malayalam film that premiered in theaters this week.

For those unfamiliar with the film, Basil portrays a sub-inspector tasked with solving a murder case. During a media event for the film, he revealed that he referenced the popular cop franchise Singam while preparing for his role. “I confirmed this with the director, but I only had two weeks to get in shape and hit the gym. I envisioned that when I exited the police jeep, it would be accompanied by this music (hums), but it should actually be the Singam theme music. However, with just two weeks, my gym instructor advised that it still wouldn’t be the Singam music,” Basil explained.

Praavinkoodu Shappu is directed by Sreeraj Sreenivasan and features a cast that includes Soubin Shahir, Basil Joseph, and Chemban Vinod Jose, along with Chandini Sreedharan, Shivajith, and others.

The Singam franchise comprises three installments, with Suriya portraying the character of cop Durai Singam. Directed by Hari, this action drama centers on the titular cop's battle against corrupt forces. The Singam series is available for streaming on SunNXT and the OTTplay Premium app.
