2023 was a monumental year for world cinema, especially in Hollywood, as it saw some of the most anticipated films hit the big screen after years of waiting. Among the many films that contributed to the revival of cinema, Barbie stood out as a major force. Starring Margot Robbie as the iconic Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the movie was directed and written by Greta Gerwig, who solidified her status as one of the most successful filmmakers with a billion-dollar movie under her belt. The massive success of the movie led to widespread speculation about the future of the film and whether there is potential for it to become a franchise. After much anticipation, the filmmaker has finally addressed the topic.
Is a Ken Solo Film Possible?
For months, there has been ongoing discussion about how Barbie could evolve into a franchise, with talk of a sequel and a Ken solo spinoff focusing on Ryan Gosling's portrayal of the doll. The idea of a Ken film has captivated fans worldwide, who are eager to know if such a project is possible. Over the past year, the possibility of a Ken spinoff has been both raised and denied several times. However, Greta Gerwig has now provided a rather vague response that neither confirms nor completely dismisses the idea. Read on to find out more.
In a conversation with her screenwriting partner Noah Baumbach, as reported by ComicBook, Greta Gerwig discussed the public's obsession with Ryan Gosling's version of Ken. When asked about the potential for a solo Ken spinoff, Gerwig responded with a smile, "I mean, the truth is, you know — I guess we'll see." This ambiguous statement suggests that while the idea may be under consideration, it's still uncertain whether it will materialize into a movie or be shelved.
Margot Robbie on the Idea of a Sequel
Recently, Barbie star Margot Robbie also shared her thoughts on the possibility of a sequel. Robbie discussed how Greta Gerwig poured everything into the making of Barbie, and how the reaction to the film has been overwhelming and unprecedented. She revealed that Gerwig approaches filmmaking with the mindset that she may never revisit the material again, which drives her to give her all to the project.
Robbie added, "So I don't know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us. I think Warners would also agree. I don't know what more could even look like. We want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie has. I don't know if it has to be Barbie 2. Why can't it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that."
Barbie is currently streaming on JioCinema in India. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
