Asif Ali Admits Lack of Confidence in Playing Larger-Than-Life Roles Like Fahadh Faasil in "Aavesham"

Asif Ali's latest movie, Rekhachithram, has become another hit, earning him more praise and recognition than ever. The Malayalam actor is thrilled about his role as a cop in this crime thriller, but he’s also looking forward to exploring other characters in the future.

In a chat with Hindustan Times, Asif mentioned that many people reach out to him for crime thrillers because they see him as relatable in roles like CI Vivek Gopinath from Rekhachithram.

While he’s beaming with joy over the success of Rekhachithram (now streaming on Sony LIV), he admitted that the role was quite challenging. Since he and Rekha never share a scene, he had to maintain an emotional connection with her character throughout the film.

A different type of police officer

I used to feel pretty insecure about playing police officers. The ones I’ve seen in movies are always these big, muscular guys, which made me doubt myself since I’m only 5 feet 7 inches and have a smaller frame. But in real life, the cops I’ve encountered look just like me—normal people. I really wanted to portray a regular cop on screen, and I managed to do that with Rekhachithram and Thalavan. Asif Ali also mentioned that dealing with failure is tough for him. “When my film doesn’t do well, I can’t help but get emotional. It really throws me off, and I find it hard to bounce back. The years 2022 and 2023 were particularly rough for me.”

In a recent chat, the actor from 2018 shared his desire to take on bigger-than-life roles that he hasn't had the chance to play yet. "I really need to build my confidence to portray characters like Yash in KGF. I was just telling Fahadh Faasil how much I admired his performance as Ranga in Aavesham. Honestly, I feel like I can't pull off something like that yet. But I'm working on it and getting closer. I really want to nail that kind of role," Ali said with a smile.

Tiki Taka is going to be my KGF

The Level Cross star is set to appear in a film titled Tiki Taka, alongside Wamiqa Gabbi and Naslen, which he believes will pave the way for him to land bigger roles. He shared, “I’ve always wanted to be part of a film like KGF, and director VS Rohith’s Tiki Taka is going to be my version of that. I’m halfway through filming, playing a role that’s larger than life. It’s a commercial action film packed with mass appeal. To prepare, I hit the gym and gained nearly 10 kgs, completely transforming my look, even achieving a six-pack. Unfortunately, on the third day of shooting, I had a serious accident that left me bedridden for three months. It was a really tough time for me.”

He’s one of the few Malayalam actors who insists on having a complete script from directors before committing to a project. “I need to have a clear understanding of my role in the film. In the past, it was challenging to ask a senior director for a bound script, as it wasn’t seen as respectful in the industry. But that’s changed now. Working with younger directors feels like collaborating with peers or friends. The freedom we have when working with people our age is unique. I get my space; I can voice my opinions, and they can challenge me too. The connection we have really benefits my work,” Ali explained about his approach. Looking ahead to 2025, he has a packed schedule with appearances in Tiki Taka, as well as director Jeethu Joseph’s Mirage and Thamar KV’s Sarkeet.
