Anurag Kashyap Walks Away from OTT Platform Over Creative Differences
1 month ago | 5 Views
The last couple of days have been all about Anurag Kashyap dropping some pretty shocking insights into the current state of the Hindi film industry. He’s been pointing out how the true art of filmmaking seems to be fading away, getting overshadowed by algorithms and trends. With over twenty years in the game, he’s given us some all-time favorite films. Plus, he was one of the trailblazers in the Indian streaming scene, teaming up with Vikramaditya Motwane and Varun Grover to create Sacred Games for Netflix.
In a recent twist, Kashyap revealed that he pitched an original concept to a streaming service, but they wanted to turn it into something like Money Heist. Not feeling that direction, he chose to back out of the talks.
Anurag Kashyap Talks About Proposing a Show to an OTT Platform
Anurag Kashyap recently chatted with The Hindu about the hold-up with Kennedy's release and how Zee's financial struggles with other projects have affected the film. He pointed out that all the executives who originally approved the Rahul Bhat-led project have since left the company, which complicates things even more.
In the conversation, Kashyap also shared that he once thought about turning Kennedy's main character into a series. This reminded him of a time he pitched an original idea to a streaming service but got really frustrated with their response.
He mentioned that the unnamed platform was super interested in his idea, but the feedback felt overly cautious and driven by algorithms. Kashyap said, “It was killing the essence of the show. I was pitching something unique, and they wanted to make it like Money Heist. I just threw my hands up and walked away.”

Rahul Bhat talks about Kennedy's release
After the release of Black Warrant, Rahul Bhat sat down with OTTplay for an exclusive interview, where he talked about the postponed release of Kennedy in theaters. Despite the delay, Bhat expressed that he’s not too worried as long as he gets to collaborate with amazing filmmakers. "I truly believe everything happens for a reason. Kennedy might not be out yet, but I've gained so much from this journey, especially working with a genius like Anurag Kashyap. I always say, let me team up with directors like him a thousand times, and I won’t mind if the film doesn’t hit the screens,” he shared.
Bhat went on to say, “I've really evolved as an actor thanks to Kennedy. Collaborating with filmmakers like Anurag (Kashyap), Vikram (Vikramaditya Motwane), and other talented directors only sharpens your skills. I didn’t spend my life just reading books or watching classic films—I’ve picked up everything through real-life experiences. When I first entered the industry, I was a pretty bad actor. Thank goodness I didn’t end up doing 50 awful films. What’s the point of that? You eventually pass away, leaving behind a legacy of 50 forgettable movies. I’d much rather have 5-10 great ones. I feel so lucky that I’ve had the chance to work with such incredible directors and learn from them. Plus, I’m grateful they’ve allowed me to earn while I grow.”
Kashyap's recent insights have got everyone in the industry talking, and with Kennedy's release still up in the air, fans are buzzing about what’s next for these projects. Keep an eye on OTTplay for the latest news on this and all things streaming and movies.
