Anuja is hitting the OTT scene! Just a few days after snagging a nomination for Best Live Action Short at the Oscars, this film set in New Delhi is set to premiere digitally next month, right before the big night. It's a collaboration between Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra's Purple Pebble Pictures, and Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment, who’s an Oscar winner herself.

On Wednesday night, Netflix India's official social media accounts dropped the trailer for Anuja, saying, “ANUJA is a tale of resilience, sisterhood, and hope. This Academy Award Nominated Live Action Short Film hits Netflix on February 5.” So, Anuja will debut just a few weeks before the Oscars, which are happening on March 3 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The film centers around a talented nine-year-old named Anuja, who faces a tough choice between pursuing her education or working in a factory with her sister — a decision that will impact their lives forever. It features performances by Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag. Guneet is on board as an executive producer, while Mindy Kaling is producing. Recently, Priyanka Chopra Jonas also joined as an executive producer.

Anuja got nominated for an Oscar

Adam J Graves and Suchitra Mattai's film is up against A Lien, I'm Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent in the Oscars 2025 race.

Anuja is a collaboration with the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a non-profit started by filmmaker Mira Nair's family to help street and working kids, along with Shine Global and Krushan Naik Films. Guneet previously produced the 2023 Oscar-winning documentary short The Elephant Whisperers and was also an executive producer for Period. End of Sentence, which snagged the 2019 Oscar for documentary short film.

Recently, veteran TV director Vinta Nanda criticized the “flawed” Academy system, pointing out how influential producers like Priyanka and Guneet overshadow the actual creators of Anuja. Another Indian film, Santosh, didn’t make it to the Oscar nominations either.
