Anime Wars: Solo Leveling Surges in Streaming, Another Contender Rises in Theaters

There is a strong belief among fans of Solo Leveling that their cherished dark fantasy series will eventually outshine the long-established One Piece in terms of ratings on Crunchyroll, despite the latter's decades-long head start. However, before it can challenge Eiichiro Oda’s renowned work, Solo Leveling must first surpass Demon Slayer, which currently occupies the second position in the popular anime library.
Recently, the adaptation of Chugong’s web novel and manhwa has overtaken Jujutsu Kaisen, claiming the third spot with over 500,000 ratings (503.6K and still increasing). Meanwhile, Jujutsu Kaisen has seen a decline, now sitting at 491.4K ratings, while One Piece leads with 583.7K ratings. Demon Slayer holds the second position with 575.7K ratings, leaving Solo Leveling less than 70,000 ratings away from potentially taking its place.
In the realm of the Japanese box office, Demon Slayer's previously unassailable position is now facing competition from a new contender in the industry. Although the narrative of Tanjiro is not yet concluded, with the final film trilogy, Infinity Castle, in development, a new anime film set to premiere in January poses a significant challenge to the dominance of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Demon Slayer vs Mobile Suit Gundam: Japanese box office race
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- premiered in Japanese theaters on January 17, 2025, quickly ascending to the top of the domestic box office charts. It maintained its number one position for four consecutive weeks, as reported by Screen Rant. According to Oricon, Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has already grossed over 2.2 billion yen (approximately $14 million) since its release, with a report on February 10 confirming that it has attracted 1.38 million viewers and continues to draw in audiences.
The box office performance of the Demon Slayer compilation movie may soon face challenges.
In contrast, the 2023 release, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village, concluded its theatrical run with approximately 2.26 million attendees, generating around 3.1 billion yen (approximately $20 million) in revenue. Both films are classified as compilation movies. As the competition intensifies, Demon Slayer continues to hold a leading position. The recent theatrical release from the Gundam franchise has further invigorated interest in this classic series.
While Demon Slayer currently maintains its top ranking on both Crunchyroll and at the box office, the increasing figures in both areas raise concerns regarding the series' future trajectory.
