Ananth Mahadevan Critiques Biopics and Remix Films: The Crisis of Authenticity in Cinema
16 days ago | 5 Views
Ananth Mahadevan, an experienced filmmaker, recently shared his thoughts on the current landscape of cinema, particularly highlighting the trend of remix films and biopics. He believes that today's filmmaking is leaning more towards convenience instead of creativity. "At home, we don’t work alone. We prefer others to do the heavy lifting for us... This mindset has taken over filmmakers. They seek out ready-made content. Nowadays, filmmakers shy away from using their creativity... When they do, it feels like a struggle, and they want to avoid that. If they can’t handle it, they resort to making remixes," Mahadevan remarked, voicing his worries about the complacency among filmmakers.
He also commented on the growing popularity of biographical films, labeling them as a "gimmick." "They say, 'I’ll create a film about a sports star, a cricketer, a boxer, or a historical figure.' This is just a big con. Bollywood has embraced this formula of featuring a well-known person, adding some flair, and calling it a 'biopic' to present it to the audience. It’s like calling a Chinese dosa a dosa when it’s not the real deal. This is diluted cinema—over-the-top and not a true biopic."
For Mahadevan, a genuine biopic is like "writing on stone." "If I’m making a film about you, I need to be truthful," he stressed, underlining the importance of authenticity when portraying real individuals.
