After the heinous rape and murder of a young junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the city has witnessed unprecedented protests from different corners of life. From Tollywood celebrities to doctors and civic society – there have been rallies hosted by thousands of people every day. On Sunday, September 1, several celebrities, including Swastika Mukherjee, Sohini Sarkar, Ushasie Chakraborty, Sudipta Chakraborty, Bidipta Chakraborty, along with thousands of other people, rallied and sat in dharna at Esplanade throughout the night. On September 2, independent musicians took to the street and performed the whole night at Jadavpur 8B bus stand.
Amid this uproar, Bengali films have suffered. The release dates of films, including Parambrata Chatterjee’s Ei Raat Tomar Amar – which features Anjan Dutt and Aparna Sen, Anko Ki Kothin, and others got postponed. In fact, the films – Srijit Mukherji’s Padatik and Raj Chakraborty’s Babli, which were released on August 15, suffered at the box office.
Films to be released
Now, some films are being scheduled to be dropped before the full-on Puja releases hit theatres. Joy Sengupta and Aryann Bhowmik’s Oprakashito will be released on September 6. Directed by Soham Acharya, the film also features Debleena Dutt, who has actively participated in the protest rallies.
Meanwhile, Indraneil Sengupta and Ritwick Chakraborty’s Porichoy Gupta will hit the theatres on September 20. Ritwick has always been vocal about current issues on his social media. However, he always chooses a sarcastic tone instead of direct attacks. He continued with his unique protest style even during the RG Kar incident. From the ruling party spokesperson to his coworker Kachan Mullick (who made headlines for attacking junior doctors) – no one was spared from Ritwick’s taunt. Now he posted a photo of his upcoming release.
