The world may not be ready for the latest piece of news that has surfaced online, potentially changing the cinematic landscape. Reports reveal that American Psycho is getting yet another adaptation. Yes, you read that right. At first glance, this might seem like a risky move, considering the novel is now legendary and the original adaptation, led by Christian Bale, is an iconic cult classic. However, it appears that Lionsgate is indeed developing a new version. Recent reports suggest that the studio has been working on a story that will allow this new adaptation to stand on its own, and they may have found the right filmmaker in Challengers director Luca Guadagnino.

Another American Psycho Adaptation in the Works

For those unfamiliar, American Psycho is a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991. The book became an instant hot topic due to its controversial and violent content, leading to it being banned in several parts of the world. In 2000, Mary Harron adapted it into a film featuring actors like Christian Bale, Jared Leto, and others, turning it into the cult classic it is today. Fans have long held this film in high regard, so the idea of another adaptation may raise eyebrows.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate does not intend to remake Christian Bale’s American Psycho, but instead, create something with its own unique identity. The studio has reportedly been in talks with Luca Guadagnino for some time, and they have finally found common ground to start work on the project.

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement. “Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.” Lionsgate believes Guadagnino is the ideal choice to breathe new life into this story, offering a fresh perspective. The film is being developed by Lionsgate and Frenesy Films, with Sam Pressman set to executive produce.

About American Psycho

The official synopsis for American Psycho (2000) reads: “Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie obsessed with success, status, and style, with a stunning fiancée (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders, and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire of the dark side of yuppie culture in the '80s, while presenting a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.”

The film stars Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, and Reese Witherspoon, alongside a massive ensemble cast. It is currently available on Lionsgate Play, and you can also stream it with your OTTplay Premium subscription.
