From Malayalam films racking up hit after hit to Telugu cinema serving up content that appeals to audiences all over India, the South film industries—Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada—have really taken charge, becoming serious contenders against the Hindi film industry.

As we kick off 2025, it’s interesting to see that the top 10 picks on Netflix India feature several South releases, including the Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi film, along with Dulquer Salman's Lucky Baskhar.

2024 was definitely the year for South cinema. Kicking off the New Year, Netflix's top 10 most viewed films included the Tamil biopic drama Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, along with the Telugu crime thriller Lucky Baskhar featuring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead.

Amaran tells the inspiring story of the late Major Mukund Varadarajan and is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, with Sai Pallavi shining as the female lead. This film has turned out to be a major hit at the box office in 2024, and now that it’s available on Netflix, it’s once again climbing the charts as one of the most popular films. On the other hand, Lucky Baskhar, a gripping period drama directed by Venky Atluri, follows a bank employee who becomes a smuggler and gets caught up in shady dealings, keeping viewers glued to their screens.

What other South titles are currently in the top 10 on Netflix?

The new Tamil movie Sorgavaasal, starring RJ Balaji, is gaining a lot of love from viewers on streaming platforms. The action-packed drama takes place in a prison and follows the chaos that erupts after a notorious gangster dies behind bars.

Also making waves is RRR: Behind and Beyond, a documentary that dives into the making of SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster. It gives fans a peek behind the curtain, showcasing the production process and featuring stars like Ram Charan and NTR Jr.
