Unni Mukundan's action-packed thriller Marco, made on a budget of Rs 30 Cr, is creating quite a buzz. It's not just making waves in the South film scene but also catching attention in Bollywood. There are even talks about theater owners considering swapping Varun Dhawan’s Baby John for the Hindi version of this Haneef Adeni film.
While promoting Marco in Mumbai on Saturday, Unni chatted with the media about potential Bollywood projects he’s keen on, including a collaboration with Hrithik Roshan, and shared insights on the film's success so far.
Unni Mukundan: I really hope to get the chance to direct Hrithik Roshan someday
The Hindi version of the film is smashing records, raking in Rs 50 lakh already, which is the highest ever for a Hindi-dubbed Malayalam film. After nine days, its total worldwide earnings have hit Rs 64 Cr, according to industry sources.
When asked about his dream collaborations in Bollywood, Unni expressed, “I’d love to work with all the actors since they’re all doing amazing stuff. We even have a Bollywood actor (Kabir Duhan Singh) in our film. I hope to team up with everyone, including the directors.”
The actor, who also starred in the Tamil hit Garudan earlier this year, named Hrithik Roshan as his “favorite Bollywood action hero.” He shared, “I grew up watching tons of action movies, and my favorite actors are all action stars. If I bump into Hrithik Roshan while I’m in Mumbai, I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished my goal.” He added, “I dream of directing a film with Hrithik Roshan. One day, I’ll make it happen.”
For those who don’t know, Unni began his career as an assistant director under Lohithadas before making his acting debut in the Dhanush film Seedan. He also helped with the script for Sethu’s Mammootty film Oru Kuttanadan Blog in 2018.
Unni Mukundan: Mohanlal has raised the bar really high in Malayalam cinema
Unni took a moment to give a shoutout to his co-stars, including Kabir Duhan Singh and Yukti Thareja, for the film's success. “When you dive into a project, you really have to give it your all. I think everyone on the team, from the director to my co-stars, felt the same way. If you think I did well in the movie, it’s because everyone else brought their A-game too; it’s all connected,” he shared.
He also mentioned that this is pretty standard in Malayalam cinema. “We have legends like Mohanlal in our industry, and he’s set the bar really high. If we manage to do anything even close to his level, people will notice,” he added.
Unni brushed off any comparisons between Marco and other Bollywood action flicks like Animal and Kill. “We’re not in the business of competing with other films,” he said, noting that he’s a big fan of both. “My team and I are just thrilled that our little film is making waves,” Unni wrapped up.
