Music composer Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal notice to the producers of Adhik Ravichandran's newly released film, Good Bad Ugly, featuring Ajith Kumar and Trisha Krishnan. He is seeking ₹5 crore in damages for the unauthorized use of his songs. However, the producers informed Hindustan Times that they obtained a no objection certificate (NOC) from the music labels prior to using the tracks.
Good Bad Ugly producers claim they received a NOC
Producer Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar from Mythri Movie Makers, who collaborated with People’s Media Factory on the film, stands his ground in a conversation with HT, asserting that they acted appropriately in incorporating Ilaiyaraaja’s songs in Good Bad Ugly. “We secured permission from all the necessary music labels for the songs featured in the film. Since the labels own the rights, we adhered to the proper procedures and obtained NOCs from them. We’ve done everything according to the rules,” he explains.
Ilaiyaraaja sends a legal notice to the producers
Ilaiyaraaja raised concerns in a notice stating that his songs "Otha Rubayum Tharen" from Nattupura Pattu, "Ilamai Idho Idho" from Sakalakala Vallavan, and "En Jodi Manja Kuruvi" from Vikram were featured in the film Good Bad Ugly without his approval.
According to a portion of his notice obtained by News18, he expressed, “These actions represent unauthorized use, appropriation, and a blatant violation of our Client’s copyright and moral rights. It’s important to note that he has never granted any permission or consent, whether explicit or implied, for the use, alteration, distortion, or modification of the musical works included in the film Good Bad Ugly.”
Ilaiyaraaja is also seeking a written apology and a compensation of ₹5 crore, insisting that they cease using his songs in the movie immediately. The notice requested, “Please remove the altered versions of 'Otha Rubayum Tharen' from Nattupura Pattu, 'Ilamai Idho Idho' from Sakalakala Vallavan, and 'En Jodi Manja Kuruvi' from Vikram from all platforms where they are available or performed; and provide an unconditional apology.”
Good Bad Ugly has achieved remarkable success, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025 with a total of ₹171.50 crore globally. Ilaiyaraaja has been actively defending his music rights, recently sending legal notices to the producers of Manjummel Boys and Coolie.
