Agent represented Akhil Akkineni's most significant film to date, with a production period exceeding two years. This eagerly awaited action drama, helmed by Surender Reddy, premiered in theaters on April 28, 2023, but ultimately became one of the largest failures in the history of Telugu cinema.

Agent out on Sony Liv and OTTplay Platform

Produced by Anil Sunkara, the film experienced substantial financial setbacks, resulting in the producer's inactivity in Tollywood for several months. Originally, Agent was scheduled to debut on SonyLIV just one month following its theatrical release; however, financial disagreements between the creators and the platform led to considerable delays. After almost two years, the film ultimately commenced streaming on March 14, 2025.

Although the postponed OTT release generated some intrigue among viewers who did not see it in theatres, "Agent" has proven to be a failure on streaming platforms as well. Audiences have taken to social media to ridicule the film, especially its excessive action sequences. A particularly viral clip shared online lampooned a stunt scene, raising questions about how such exaggerated action was included in the final version.

The agent ended in massive losses

Director Surender Reddy, recognized for his distinctive filmmaking style and the triumph of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, was anticipated to showcase Akhil in a compelling action-oriented role. The involvement of the esteemed Malayalam actor Mammootty in Agent further heightened the initial excitement surrounding the film. Nevertheless, these elements did not contribute to Agent's success.

Following its lacklustre performance at the box office, Akhil has not launched another film, and the resurgence of criticism on social media has once again cast Agent in an unfavourable light. Despite being produced with a substantial budget, the film continues to face negative reactions even on streaming platforms.
