'Agent' OTT release: The digital release of Director Surender Reddy's film, featuring Akhil Akkineni, is set to occur after its lacklustre performance at the box office in 2023. Originally premiered in theatres on April 28, 2023, the movie will be available for streaming on SonyLIV beginning March 14.
Agent to stream on Sony LIV
Sony LIV has delighted its audience by revealing that the film Agent will be available for digital viewing after a two-year postponement. The announcement stated, “ALERT: A spy unlike any other is on the move! MISSION BRIEF: Smooth maneuvers. Life-or-death stakes. Unparalleled action. Experience thrilling action and exceptional style featuring Akhil Akkineni, Mammootty, Dino Morea, and Sakshi Vaidya on March 14, exclusively on Sony LIV. The movie narrates the tale of a determined RAW agent, Ricky (Akhil), who is entrusted with a significant mission by the RAW Chief, Colonel Mahadev, also known as The Devil (Mammootty). In his undercover operation to apprehend the former RAW agent Dharma, referred to as God (Dino Morea), he faces the additional challenge of thwarting Dharma's perilous scheme to undermine India. Sakshi Vaidya portrays Vidya, an aspiring pilot training officer at NASA. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar plays a pivotal role, while Urvashi Rautela appears in a special performance.
The spectacular failure of Agent
When filming for Agent commenced in 2021, there were considerable expectations surrounding the project, largely due to its impressive cast and substantial budget. Akhil's physical transformation further heightened anticipation, as audiences were eager to witness him in a role that diverged from his previous performances. The narrative of this spy thriller was crafted by Vakkantham Vamsi and produced by Rambrahmam Sunkara, Ajay Sunkara, and Pathi Deepa Reddy, under the banners of AK Entertainments and Surender 2 Cinema.
Regrettably, Agent was developed with a budget of approximately ₹85 crore, yet it garnered only ₹10.05 crore net in India and ₹13.4 crore globally, according to Sacnilk. This resulted in the film being the most significant failure of Akhil's career. Despite his debut in the 2015 film Akhil and subsequent roles in productions such as Hello, Mr. Majnu, and Most Eligible Bachelor, he has yet to achieve substantial success. Following the film's disappointing performance, Akhil issued a statement addressing its shortcomings.
Fans have been curious about the release date of the film on OTT platforms, while producer Anil frequently stated that he was unaware of the reasons behind the delay. However, it appears that the long wait may soon be over. Akhil has not yet revealed details about his next project. In November 2024, he shared the news of his engagement to Zainab Ravdjee.
