Adolescence" Filming Locations Revealed: Fans Confused by Accents and Settings

Lately, conversations about the new Netflix series, Adolescence, have highlighted the mix of accents, leaving some viewers puzzled about where the story takes place. Stephen Graham's unique Scouse accent really stands out in his strong performance, but the different accents of other characters have led to some uncertainty about the show's location. In response to these questions, the director has clarified the setting of the series.

What is the setting of Adolescence?

Time Out reports that Philip Barantini, the director of the hit series, shared that casting Owen Cooper played a key role in determining the geographical setting of Adolescence. The majority of the filming took place in South Kirkby, a town in West Yorkshire, which is also home to Production Park studios. Since Cooper hails from Warrington, Barantini envisioned the series being filmed primarily in northern England.

He mentioned, “We knew it was going to be set somewhere in the north of England. We also knew it would be from somewhere around wherever our Jamie was from, because it would have been unfair to make him do an accent,” as noted by LadBible. So, while the actors may have different accents, the series maintains a distinct northern atmosphere.

Adolescence has received significant praise for its intense examination of misogyny and the manosphere, addressing these challenging topics with raw honesty. The compelling drama follows a family in crisis after their son, Jamie (played by Cooper), is arrested on the shocking charge of murdering a girl.

Shooting spots in Adolescence

The BBC reports that the police station seen in the first episode and the youth detention center from episode three were built at Production Park, taking around six weeks to finish. Just a quick drive away, Minsthorpe Community College served as the setting for the school scenes in episode two.

To enhance the show's authenticity, the Miller family's home, which plays a key role in the series' emotional storyline, was filmed in a local house owned by Dylan Naylor and Bethany Fletcher. This location was pivotal for both the intense police raid at the beginning and the heart-wrenching climax featuring Eddie Miller, portrayed by Stephen Graham, in the final episode.

Additionally, it was noted that all filming locations were conveniently located within a 10-minute drive of each other to facilitate the one-shot technique. When characters are seen driving in the series, those scenes were filmed in real cars equipped with cameras, while a driver operates the vehicle from a frame mounted on top, allowing the actors to concentrate on their performances.
