Plot summary

David, portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, and Benji, portrayed by Kieran Culkin, are two cousins with contrasting personalities who embark on a journey through Poland to honor their deceased grandmother. The narrative takes an unforeseen twist as the unusual duo confronts long-suppressed resentments tied to their shared history.

Searchlight Pictures premiered A Real Pain in theaters in Poland on November 8, 2024, and in the United States on November 1, 2024, after its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. The film received significant acclaim from critics, particularly highlighting Eisenberg's writing and Culkin's performance. With a production budget of just $3 million, it achieved a global box office revenue of $24.1 million.

Awards and recognition

Alongside receiving four Golden Globe nominations, two nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, and recognition at the 78th British Academy Film Awards, A Real Pain achieved significant accolades, including Best Supporting Actor awards for Culkin and Best Original Screenplay for Eisenberg at each of these ceremonies. Furthermore, it was honored by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of 2024.

Eisenberg aimed to bring Mongolia to the cinema due to its representation of the Odd Couple dynamic; however, he struggled to complete the script. Just as he was on the verge of abandoning the project, an advertisement for a lunch-inclusive tour to the Auschwitz concentration camp appeared on his screen. As a third-generation survivor, Eisenberg reflected that this experience encapsulates his feelings about being a third-generation survivor: there is no appropriate way to engage with this history, leaving him with a mix of shame and exhilaration at the imagery. The privileges of modern life influence every action, hindering a complete reverence for the past.
