Ram Madhvani's web show, The Waking of a Nation, recently premiered on SonyLIV. Starring Taaruk Raina, Nikita Dutta and Sahil Mehta, the web show is set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. It attempts to reimagine the history through the Hunter commission. In a new interview, Ram revealed the thought behind incorporating a story of four friends in a larger story of independence.

In a discussion with Mid-Day, Ram Madhvani elaborated on his research efforts for The Waking of a Nation. The director also disclosed that he chose to narrate the story of four friends within the broader context of the series. When questioned about this choice, Ram articulated the underlying concept of intertwining the narrative of these four friends with the overarching theme of independence.

The purpose was to highlight the youth who were ensnared by the circumstances of their era and to explore the experiences of those who were merely 25 or 28 years old, including soldiers returning from what was then referred to as the Great World War, Ram stated.

The filmmaker emphasized that numerous individuals fought on behalf of Britain. He remarked that many personal narratives are integral to The Waking of a Nation, as audiences are drawn to such stories. In his view, this aspect provided the series, which is also available on OTTplay Premium, with a profound emotional resonance.

Regarding the fictional elements of his production, Ram mentioned, "We have taken creative liberties to incorporate the tale of four friends; this constitutes the fictional aspect of the show. Naturally, some characters are inspired by real figures, such as General Dyer and Michael O’Dwyer."

The filmmaker elaborated that his research encompassed a thorough examination of all resources accessible in the public domain. "We examined archival footage and materials from various archives located in London, Amritsar, and Mumbai," Ram remarked.

Ram Madhvani's previous works

Ram Madhvani has previously directed notable projects such as Neerja, featuring Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Dhamaka with Kartik Aaryan, and Aarya starring Sushmita Sen. All three seasons of Aarya are currently available for streaming on JioHotstar. His forthcoming project is titled Dive, which is being produced by his own production company, Ram Madhvani Films.
