A 2019 ITV series starring Martin Freeman in the lead, A Confession is based on the true-life story of the investigation into the disappearance of Sian O’Callaghan in 2011. The six-part series follows the story of the detective who solved the murder case, which also revealed a second victim and gave both families closure. Martin Freeman will be seen in the role of Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, whose investigation led to the capture of the perpetrator, but also led to him losing his career.

Unlike most police procedurals, A Confession puts the spotlight firmly on the missing girls, who are later found dead, and their families, even as Fulcher and his team try to make sense of what has befallen the victims.
What is A Confession all about?
The series traces the events leading to the arrest and eventual conviction of Christopher Halliwell, which cost Detective Fulcher his job. Halliwell’s confession to the murders of both Sian and Becky Godden-Edwards came under strange circumstances and not while under caution in the presence of a solicitor. The evidence leading to the discovery of Becky’s body, therefore, became inadmissible in court.
Fulcher was found guilty of gross misconduct, following which he resigned from the force. Halliwell received a 25-year sentence for the murder of Sian, which was later changed to life in prison, when another judge allowed the evidence to be heard. If not for Detective Fulcher’s conversation with Halliwell, Becky, who’d been missing for several years already, would have, perhaps, never been found.
