In 2018, Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha starred in the directorial debut of cinematographer Prem Kumar, titled 96. The romantic drama is about two former childhood sweethearts, who meet at a reunion and spend a night together, filled with conversations reminiscing their past.

96 was critically acclaimed for its writing and performances of the lead actors. Govind Vasantha scored the music for the film, which was recognised as one of the biggest advantages for the film’s success.

Sequel for 96 on the cards?

Recently, in conversation with OTTplay, Prem Kumar spoke about the possibilities of the film getting a sequel. He revealed that the sequel will be a proper continuation from the first film and said that the story was initially written as a novel. “I had initially written the film as a novel, which consisted of six chapters. What you have seen is only half of one of the chapters. If at all the sequel is made, it will be Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha as Ram and Jaanu only. That is how it is written and if made, will be like that only.”

The director also said that about 10-15% of writing is yet to be finished. Asked whether Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha are planned to reprise their roles, Prem Kumar said, “If the sequel is ever made, it will be only with them. Both Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi are also very busy and are big stars. So, my script too should be on par and impress them as much as 96 did. I will have to serve it properly to them. My wish is to make 96- 2 soon. Hope it happens.”
