Ponniyin Selvan- Part 1, which released in 2022, is directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The film is a historic drama, which is based on Kalki's novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film stars an ensemble including actors Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, R Parthiban, Rahman, Lal and Vikram Prabhu. Jayam Ravi played the titular character.
The film, which was the dream project for Mani Ratnam, was made on a grand scale and divided into two parts. Ponniyin Selvan- 1 has clocked two years since its release. The film is available for streaming on Prime Video, along with the second part.
Ponniyin Selvan won big at 70th National Film Awards
At this year 70th National Film Awards announced in August, Ponniyin Selvan won big and bagged awards in multiple categories. It won in categories, including Best Film, Best Composer for AR Rahman, and Best Cinematographer for Ravi Varman.
Backed by Lyca Productions, the music is scored by AR Rahman. The period drama traces the lives of rulers of Chola dynasty and the drama that unfolded between various power authorities. Mostly fictionalised, the film drew inspiration from novelist Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan and some real life characters.
The film was lauded for its aesthetically pleasing performances of the lead actors and for its narration. Although the film received criticism for changing parts of the original story, the movie was well-received by audiences and critics.
