Gandhi, My Father, featuring Akshaye Khanna and Darshan Jariwala, had its theatrical release on August 3, 2007. Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, the film was the biographical drama of Harilal Gandhi, the eldest son of Mahatma Gandhi. It was based on his biography titled, Harilal Gandhi: A Life, by Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal. Darshan Jariwala and Akshaye Khanna played a father-son duo in this movie. The storyline of this biographical drama shed light on Mahatma Gandhi's strained and complex relationship with his son Harilal. Apart from the veteran actor and Akshaye, the star cast of Gandhi, My Father included Bhumika Chawla and Shefali Shah. In the Feroz Abbas Khan directorial, Shefali was seen as Kasturba Gandhi and Bhumika played the part of Gulab Gandhi.

Akshaye Khanna on playing Harilal Gandhi

In an old interview with Hindustan Times, Akshaye Khanna spoke about playing Harilal Gandhi in Gandhi, My Father. On being asked about how he got a grip on the character, the actor said, "That was tough. I asked my director Feroz Abbas Khan how to play him. He's almost an authority on the man. He gave me Harilal's biography by Chandulal Dalal.. then I read the letters which Harilal had exchanged with Bapu and Kasturba. That was pretty much it."

The actor added that he saw Harilal Gandhi's character as the most 'courageous' role he played in his career. He never saw this part as a dark character. Akshaye also stated that Gandhi, My Father was a film where he was immensely satisfied with his work.
