Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, the beloved Tamil romantic drama featuring Silambarasan and Trisha, is celebrating its 15th anniversary today (February 26). Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, this film has earned a special place in the hearts of fans and is highly regarded in the careers of both the actors and the director. Plus, it’s a double celebration since it’s also Gautham Menon’s birthday!
Celebrating 15 years of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa: Karthik and Jessie’s love story lives on
Jessie isn’t just a name; it represents so much more than someone from a Christian background. When you hear Jessie, you might picture a woman in a crisp, pleated blue cotton saree, hailing from Alleppey, likely raised by strict parents. And you can’t think of Jessie without also thinking of Karthik, a Chennai guy with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. He might be a few years younger than Jessie, but he’s definitely determined to win her heart.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa hit the screens—a story that struck a chord with so many. Remember when Hosanna turned everyone into wannabe rappers? The film is still playing somewhere in Chennai even now. Initially released as Ye Maaye Chesave featuring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, it was later remade in Tamil with Trisha and Silambarasan. This film really highlighted the trend of Tamil guys falling for Malayali girls, challenged norms with younger guys chasing older women, and proved that a movie doesn’t need action to stick in our minds for years.
GVM decided to go with a unique ending just for the Tamil version
The films Ye Maaye Chesave in Telugu and Ekk Deewana Tha in Hindi had a different outcome for their lead couples compared to Karthik and Jessi in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon chose to bring the couples back together in the Hindi and Telugu versions, while he stuck to his original vision of keeping Karthik and Jessie apart in the Tamil version.
Gautham has often explained that his decision was influenced by the preferences of his Telugu producers and the audience, who wanted a happy ending. So, he decided to take some creative liberties to deliver a more upbeat conclusion. However, he has always believed that the story in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa was more grounded and realistic. In the end, Karthik and Jessie part ways on good terms after watching the film Karthik made about their relationship, with Jessie moving on to live with her husband in the US.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa continues to be celebrated for its unique filmmaking style and creative decisions. You can catch the film streaming on JioHotstar.
