August 15 is a special day for director Pa Ranjith. The film, not only marks the release date of his latest film Thangalaan, but also marks his debut as director with his 2012 film Attakathi. The film is available for streaming on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium.

12 years of Attakathi

Pa Ranjith is one of the strong voices of Tamil cinema. The director spear-headed a wave of cinema which spoke for the oppressed and brought a new facet to Tamil cinema, by giving voice for the unheard. The filmmaker started his journey as a director after assisting Venkat Prabhu, by helming his first feature film Attakathi in 2012. The film released on August 15, marking the 12th anniversary. The film is available for streaming on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium.

Interestingly, the film was distributed by Studio Green banner, which also co-produced Ranjith’s latest feature Thangalaan. Attakathi is a romantic drama film starring Dinesh, who subsequently went to be known as Attakathi Dinesh. The film also starred Nandita Swetha and Aishwarya Rajesh among others. Produced by CV Kumar, the film earned Ranjith a recognition and went on to direct some iconic films in Tamil cinema like Madras, Kaala, Natchathiran Nagargiradhu and Sarpatta Parambarai.

Pa Ranjith’s latest film to hit theatres is Thangalaan. Headlined by actor Vikram, the film also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy, Hari Krishnan, Daniel Caltagirone and others. The film is backed by Studio Green banner and is a period action drama.


The film revolves around a group of tribals who are employed by a British officer to find gold in KGF. In the process, the tribals are targeted by local sorceress who creates a havoc for them.

Thangalaan has music scored by GV Prakash Kumar. The film’s post theatrical rights are bagged by Netflix. The film will release in languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
