In a village located in Thanjavur, there resides a young girl named Leela (Roopa Koduvayur), who lives with her parents, her brother, and his wife, Prema. Similarly, "Yamakaathagai" employs supernatural elements to propel its narrative, specifically focusing on superstitions that unveil the true nature of individuals who disguise themselves as humans after committing heinous acts. The villagers hold the belief that Leela’s corpse will remain within her home until those responsible for her wrongdoings are exposed and publicly punished. Consequently, "Yamakaathagai" transforms into a straightforward narrative about masked individuals compelled to seek redemption in the public eye.

In one of the few lighter scenes in "Yamakaathagai," Leela shares with her lover Anbu the moment they first met. While this scenario may not be unprecedented in Tamil cinema, debut director Peppin George Jayaseelan introduces a role reversal by allowing a woman to take the lead. Leela, who consensually records her conversations with Anbu for the sake of romance, stands as the film's central figure. Following a dispute between her parents, she is discovered hanging by her mother Chandra (portrayed excellently by Geetha Kailasam) after intervening to confront her father Selvaraj’s behavior (played by Raju Rajappan). When Chandra suggests that Leela’s father has been possessed—what other explanation could there be for a man who suddenly erupts in anger towards his family?—Selvaraj reacts with fury, directing his wrath towards both his daughter and wife. The film provides subtle hints of the characters' misdeeds before the central tragedy of Leela’s premature death unfolds.

Yamakaathaghi is notable for its cohesive narrative that illustrates how the death of a woman fails to address the longstanding issues of patriarchy and misogyny. Peppin employs supernatural elements and cultural beliefs to provide a critique of the true affliction faced by women: societal norms that prioritize honor over reality and freedom, suggesting that a family's reputation is determined by its control over women rather than the misdeeds of men.
