Wife Off Review
Wife Off, written and directed by Bhanu Yerabandi, is a screenplay-driven film that offers several twists and turns. While Bhanu succeeds in delivering a few decent surprises, the writing feels flat, and the film lacks the kind of moments that would keep you on the edge of your seat.
A significant drawback of the film is the execution of scenes before and after each twist. These moments feel dull, uninspired, and poorly executed, further dampened by the new cast, who don't add much to the story. The portrayal of the main character, Avani, is another issue—though there’s an emotional undertone to her character, the absurd drama diminishes the impact and fails to engage the audience.
Once the main twist is revealed, the plot becomes predictable, failing to offer anything new or exciting. The revenge narrative is handled in a unique way, but everything that follows feels like a rehash of familiar tropes. Director Bhanu's cleverness with the twists is overshadowed by the lacklustre development of the rest of the film.
In terms of performance, Divya Sree, who plays Avani, portrays the emotional aspects of her character well. However, her portrayal lacks the depth necessary to fully bring the character to life. Particularly in scenes where she resorts to marijuana or turns to prostitution, her performance feels underdeveloped and lacks the maturity needed to make these moments truly impactful.
Abhinav Manikanta delivers an adequate performance in his role, though those familiar with his work in short films may find little new in his portrayal. Sai Swetha, though given limited screen time, does her best with the role. The rest of the cast delivers competent performances, but none truly stand out.
Praneeth’s music is enjoyable, though the background score falls short in enhancing the suspense and tension of the narrative. Ashkar Ali’s cinematography adds visual appeal, while Surya Rahul Tamada and Saideep Reddy Borra manage the production values well, delivering a film within its modest budget.
In the end, Wife Off is a decent attempt at crafting a suspense thriller but ultimately remains a half-baked effort, succeeding only to a certain extent. The film's potential is overshadowed by its lack of consistency and failure to fully capitalize on its twists.
Wife Off Verdict
On the whole, Wife Off is a film that has decent twists. But to enjoy them one has to sit through some silly scenes and predictable drama. If you have loads of time, give this thriller a shot on ETV Win but there is nothing new that is being showcased here.
