Vishnu Priya movie story: Balu (Nihal Raj Gowda), Vishnu (Shreyas K Manju), and Priya (Priya Prakash Varrier) are college friends entangled in a love triangle. Balu is infatuated with Priya, but she is in love with Vishnu, a fact she openly communicates to him. Tasked with conveying Balu's feelings to Priya, Vishnu instead chooses to pursue a romantic relationship with her. Naturally, Balu is deeply hurt by this betrayal. To complicate matters further, Priya's family disapproves of their relationship. Will they find a way to overcome these obstacles?

Vishnu Priya movie review: Set in the 1990s, this love story aims to capture the essence of relationships formed through fleeting glances and letters concealed within books, as envisioned by director VK Prakash, featuring Shreyas and Priya in leading roles. However, the challenge with a period backdrop is that if it fails to enhance the narrative, it can detract from the overall experience.

Who is the intended audience? Is it the current generation in their twenties, indifferent to a pre-internet era? Or is it those nearing fifty who were young adults during the story's timeframe and might experience a fleeting sense of nostalgia? If a period setting cannot be effectively utilized, as seen in films like Rifle Club (Malayalam) and the more recent Agnyathavasi, it is better to avoid it altogether.

Unfortunately, the creators of Vishnu Priya opted for this approach, resulting in a rather painful viewing experience. The film is now available on Amazon Prime Video, which made me long for the playback speed options available on Netflix. I lost track of how many times I pressed the 10-second skip button, yet the film still felt interminable.

The more significant question that arises after viewing the film is the purpose behind its conclusion. While tragic narratives can evoke strong emotions and generate substantial revenue, Vishnu Priya fails to create a connection with either of its main characters for the audience. Nevertheless, both Shreyas and Priya deliver sincere performances, with Shreyas notably moderating his body language, mannerisms, and dialogue delivery. Regrettably, their efforts are undermined by a screenplay that lacks depth and creativity.

Vishnu Priya movie verdict: A tragic love story that fails to resonate—an impressive feat in its own right.
