Picture this: You enter a gathering where everyone is buzzing about a mysterious figure who has captured the town's attention. You may not know his backstory, but the atmosphere draws you in. This is precisely how Veera Dheera Sooran - Part 2 begins—there's no formal introduction, just an immediate plunge into the turmoil. Under the direction of SU Arun Kumar, the film opens explosively, immersing you in a narrative filled with crime, betrayal, and numerous moments that leave you questioning, "What just happened?"
The story unfolds with a woman knocking on the door of Periyavar (Prudhvi Raj, stepping out of his usual roles to portray a serious character), a local figure with criminal ties. She believes her husband has been murdered by him. However, in a twist, the husband is alive and has filed a missing person report, which attracts the attention of SP Arunagiri (SJ Suryah), a morally ambiguous character who embodies the "good-bad" cop archetype. His vendetta against Periyavar sets the stage for a confrontation, leading to the introduction of our protagonist, Kaali (Vikram), an ex-gangster who has embraced a peaceful family life. You might expect him to be enjoying a quiet cup of tea, but fate has other intentions.
The first half of the film presents a gripping game of cat and mouse. Arun Kumar masterfully maintains the suspense, portraying Kaali as vulnerable rather than invincible. He is depicted as a flawed human being, desperately striving to safeguard his family, which adds depth to the storyline. The ‘Sudhakar sambavam’—a past incident—lingers like an unresolved enigma, keeping the audience on edge. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, the film introduces unexpected twists (or “kezhangu,” adding a local flavor) and a climactic showdown that will leave you nodding in approval.
However, there is an unexpected turn—quite literally. After building significant tension, Arun Kumar opts to delve into the past. The backstory, which had been tantalizingly elusive, finally comes to light. Yet, it resembles unwrapping a gift only to discover a pair of socks. While not entirely disappointing, it certainly does not meet expectations. The allure of the mystery diminishes as the backstory feels conventional, suggesting a lack of creativity and a preference for a safer narrative approach.
Nevertheless, the film attempts to redeem itself with an ambitious one-shot action sequence that showcases pure cinematic brilliance. Theni Eswar’s cinematography excels in this segment, particularly with the nighttime visuals that render each frame a work of art. The action is gripping, the stakes are elevated, and for a fleeting moment, one might think, “This is where the film truly takes off.” Unfortunately, the climax ultimately disappoints, akin to a stone skipping across water—promising yet ultimately sinking.
As for the third act? It proves to be somewhat disheartening. It resembles a rollercoaster that unexpectedly encounters a jolt, losing all its momentum. Kaali’s “superhuman” recovery after being shot and assaulted? This is precisely where the suspension of disbelief is put to the test. And the final nostalgic Vikram song? It’s akin to sprinkling glitter on a crumbling cake—visually appealing, yet it does not remedy the underlying flaws.
So, what is the conclusion? Veera Dheera Sooran - Part 2 is a film that begins with strength, captivates with its raw tension, and then falters. It’s reminiscent of that friend who excels at initiating stories but struggles to conclude them effectively. Still, it offers enough high points to keep viewers engaged, even if it fails to deliver a satisfying resolution.
