Sumo movie plot

Shiva (Shiva) lives near the beach in Chennai and works as a surfer in a hut owned by Jack (VTV Ganesh). He encounters a sumo wrestler (Yoshinori Tashiro) who has been washed ashore as he prepares to move to Australia with his lover Kanimozhi (Priya Anand). With an IQ akin to that of a one-year-old, Shiva takes the sumo under his wing and the two performs various tasks to support him, but as soon as Shiva learns that Yoshinori is a veteran wrestler from Japan, he insists on bringing him back.

Sumo movie review

Given that Mirchi Shiva, also known by the moniker Agila Ulaga Super Star Shiva, was most recently seen in Soodhukavvum 2: Naadum Naattumakkalum, it is more or less assumed that the narrative would be light-hearted and heavily based on the production and events that take place on film. As a result, if the premise of Sumo is that a Chennai man is learning about sumo, you would naturally have some expectations about how the movie will portray the evolving relationship between two men from various nations and cultures. However, Sumomori opts for absurd and childish jokes rather than exploring this topic in depth, not to mention a torrent of body-shaming insults aimed at the main character.

The people of Chennai use a number of terms to refer to Yoshinori, including "manishan thimingalam" (human whale), "gundu paiyan," "dadiyan," and "gundu thambi." Sumo then goes one step further by dressing Yoshinori as Lord Ganesh for Vinayaka Chaturthi, which makes perfect sense when trying to name someone who they think resembles the Hindu elephant god (and we don't see the physical similarity at all!). In addition to body shaming, there is also racism when Jack and Shiva visit a Japanese consulting firm and the local agent is forced to wear a kimono with his eyebrows taped up. Are there any local consultants among us who work for other nations and dress in international garb?

The movie doesn't devote enough time to developing the bond between Shiva and the sumo among all of this. Instead of the politician himself singing local songs in response to media interviews, it depicts Yogi Babu, a relation of the local MLA, as longing for Kanimozhi. Sumo is a disappointing movie with a promising premise since these scenes don't advance the plot and aren't particularly interesting. However, Sumo maintains its intention of being an entertainment, and the second half of the film follows Yoshinori's transformation to Japan and how he is pushed by Shiva and the others to win a sumo match.

The subplots are poorly written and executed even worse. The narrative concludes in a flashback with Jack telling the story, and we don't actually see the characters coming to any conclusions. For instance, the story of how Shiva and Kanimozhi are attempting to obtain an Australian visa in order to live elsewhere is not told, nor are we given any information about the couple's aspirations and attempts to do so. Jack's voiceover description of what happened to them is all we have. There are several of these underrepresented characters in Sumo, and none of them ever allow you to identify with the movie's characters.

Sumo would have been better if it had atoned for its genre change in the second half, which explores a different culture. Sumo becomes a missed opportunity when it fails in such a way that its sense of connection is lost.

Sumo movie verdict

Sumo was created to be a performer of humorous sports entertainment. It doesn't go into the sports side of things, and it can't make you giggle either. The movie, which treats sumo almost exclusively as an exhibition meant to arouse curiosity, does not include body shaming humor. SP Hosimin, the director of Aayiram Vilakku, who also directed Sumo, makes poor use of the possibilities of his characters and tale. In the end, Sumo becomes a ridiculous wanna-be comedian who misses out on his opportunities.
