Jingoism, national criticism, and emotional dramatization are just a few descriptors often associated with films centered on the Indian armed forces or narratives featuring spies who miraculously survive numerous perilous missions, without intending any disrespect to these themes.

These films primarily aim to resonate with the patriotic sentiments within us, persisting in their efforts until they achieve that goal. Terms like 'Hindustan' and 'Bhartiya' are prominently featured; however, it remains an undeniable fact that war yields no true beneficiaries. In this context, "Sky Force" stands out as a refreshing alternative, as its primary objective is to convey this very message. The film offers a cinematic portrayal of India's retaliatory strike on the Sargodha airbase in Pakistan during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, presenting a narrative that is thoughtful, concise, and devoid of excessive nationalistic rhetoric.

What is Sky Force about?

The story commences with Wing Commander K.O. Ahuja (played by Akshay Kumar) interrogating a Pakistani prisoner of war, Flight Lieutenant Ahmed Hussain (portrayed by Sharad Kelkar). Ahuja is on a quest to locate T. Krishnan Vijaya (Veer Pahariya), a junior officer he regards as a younger brother, who has gone missing following the airstrikes on the Sargodha airbase. Vijaya's wife, Geetavijaya (Sara Ali Khan), is expecting their child. Ahuja's search for Vijaya forms the central narrative, which is inspired by the true story of Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya MVC, the sole Indian Air Force officer to receive the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.

The meticulous attention to detail is noteworthy. Directors Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Anil Kapur have excelled in authentically recreating the 1960s, a feat that is evident throughout the film. Some viewers may find the first half challenging to follow due to the numerous events depicted and the filmmakers' commitment to accurately portraying Air Force protocols. By the time intermission arrives, there is much to contemplate. However, the second half of "Sky Force" shifts into an engaging investigative drama, captivating enough to keep viewers from reaching for their phones to check messages.

What works for Sky Force

Sky Force achieves significant impact largely due to Akshay Kumar's remarkable performance at this stage of his career. Despite facing criticism for his political views and film choices, his ability to evoke genuine emotion is undeniable; his tears resonate with the audience. He infuses his character with a unique vulnerability, which is particularly challenging given that he portrays an Air Force officer, a role typically associated with toughness. The film's climax is particularly effective, thanks to Kumar, who has long transcended the label of ‘khiladi’ to establish himself as a serious actor.

A pivotal moment in the film is the inclusion of Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic song, Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, during the final ten minutes, which adds a profound emotional layer—viewers are advised to have a handkerchief at the ready.

Veer Pahariya makes a strong entrance into cinema, demonstrating the ability to command a scene alongside seasoned actors, though he would benefit from further refinement. Sara Ali Khan and Nimrat Kaur have limited screen time, with Kaur appearing as a special guest. While Sara has a significant moment to showcase her talent, it ultimately falls short of expectations. Sharad Kelkar is well-cast and enhances the narrative, embodying the theme of selfless service that connects his character with Akshay’s, despite their differing nationalities.

The film's visual effects are commendably executed, and Tanishk Bagchi's score complements the storyline, particularly the poignant Maaye by Manoj Muntashir. However, the inclusion of the dance number Rang feels out of place, suggesting a compromise made for broader audience appeal.

In summary, Sky Force is a thoughtfully crafted film that prompts reflection on the selflessness of our soldiers. The montage of both fictional and real-life figures presented at the conclusion is haunting and lingers in the mind long after leaving the theater. It certainly left a lasting impression on me.
