Love Under Construction review: The Malayalam web series format has only recently emerged on OTT platforms but has quickly established its presence. The newest addition to this genre is "Love Under Construction," directed by Vishnu Raghav, which consists of six episodes and is currently available for streaming on Jio Hostar.
"Love Under Construction" explores the contrasting lives of two cousins, Pappettan (Aju Varghese) and Vinod (Neeraj Madhav), who have vastly different aspirations and outlooks on life. Pappettan resides in Kerala with his mother and works as a medical representative, while Vinod lives in Dubai, where he is focused on constructing a dream home for his parents back in Kerala. During his time in Dubai, he encounters Gouri (Gouri Kishan), and they fall in love. However, their lives take an unexpected turn when Vinod loses his job, and Gouri suggests they consider relocating to Canada for better opportunities. The couple decides to return to Kerala to discuss their marriage plans with their parents before making the significant move. What unfolds upon their return to Kerala? Will they proceed with their marriage and emigrate to Canada?
Vishnu Raghav, both the writer and director, has crafted a narrative centered around an NRI Malayali man who aspires to construct his dream home, exploring the challenges he encounters in both this endeavour and his personal life, while intertwining a romantic storyline. The director incorporates various elements characteristic of God's Own Country, such as the relatable experiences of house construction and interactions with construction workers and registration offices, which resonate with many NRI Malayalis.
As Vinod grapples with these challenges, Pappettan faces his own dilemma in the quest for a suitable bride, hindered by traditional views on femininity that often lead to his rejection. Unfortunately, the series perpetuates certain stereotypes regarding women, which is disheartening, especially since Gouri is depicted as a modern individual seeking independence from her overbearing parents. The tumultuous dynamic between Vinod and Gouri reflects the contemporary struggles couples encounter, particularly regarding familial expectations and the pursuit of a better life abroad. Additionally, the strained relationship between Gouri's father and Vinod's father highlights the influence of male ego and patriarchy in matters of love and marriage. It would have been beneficial if the director had introduced fresh elements concerning the romantic relationships of Vinod and Pappettan to enhance the series' originality. For example, "The Great Indian Kitchen" offered profound insights into male societal psychology, and "Love Under Construction" could have similarly enriched its narrative.
In terms of performances, Neeraj Madhav, Aju Varghese, and Gouri Kishan deliver commendable portrayals as Vinod, Pappettan, and Gouri, respectively. Both Neeraj Madhav and Aju Varghese, as seasoned actors with impressive careers, engage the audience through their interactions in this series. The supporting cast, including Anand Mamadhan, Thankam Mohan, and Ann Jameela Saleem, also leaves a notable impression. The musical score, composed by Gopi Sundar, enhances the series with its songs and background music.
