Perusu Movie Review: A Slow-Burning Adult Comedy with Untapped Potential and a Satisfying End
1 day ago | 5 Views
Perusu Movie Plot:
Halasayam, the father of two adult sons, Sami (Sunil) and Durai (Vaibhav), passes away while watching television. However, the grieving family is quickly confronted with the challenge of managing their emotions upon discovering that Halasayam suffers from a condition known as Angel’s Lust. They must ensure that the villagers remain unaware of this diagnosis while simultaneously making arrangements for his funeral.
Perusu Movie Review:
The central concept of 'Perusu', which serves as its foundation, is both intriguing and innovative, offering a wealth of cinematic possibilities. It effectively serves as a medium for a wide range of emotions and genres. Director Ilango Ram, who previously created the film in Sinhalese under the title Nelum Kulun, adopts a comedic approach, and the juxtaposition of a funeral home adds an intriguing twist to Perusu. While the film does manage to incorporate moments of humour and maximize its situational potential, it, unfortunately, falters on several occasions.
Halasayam's character is only minimally explored during his lifetime; he is depicted as someone who chastises young boys for sneaking glances at women bathing in the village pond. One of these boys harbours resentment towards Halasayam, and just as he plans to retaliate by embarrassing him, the old man passes away. However, this does not deter the boy from pursuing his revenge. The narrative truly unfolds after Halasayam's natural death, revealing the complexities of his character with each subsequent scene.
As the film is categorized as an adult comedy, it deserves commendation for not resorting to crude humour to exploit its censor certification. The dynamic between Sunil and Vaibhav, who are brothers in real life, stands out as one of the film's strongest elements, particularly as they navigate various challenges to uphold their deceased father's honour. A poignant moment shared between the brothers over drinks, reflecting on their father's differing treatment of them, is crafted with the emotional depth the film requires. Additionally, "Perusu" effectively conveys that it should not be taken too seriously, especially regarding the theme of death. The film successfully creates a humorous atmosphere around the grieving family, and the characters are well-developed within their limited screen time, making their contributions both meaningful and appropriate.
However, Perusu does not fully capitalize on the unique opportunities presented by its singular premise. Near the conclusion of the film, when nearly all the characters are assembled around the coffin, the humour reaches its peak. Had the film maintained this tone throughout, it could have emerged as the unexpected standout of the week. While there are moments that make the viewing experience enjoyable, there are also sections that may lead one to wish for a fast-forward option to bypass them.
As previously mentioned, the final thirty minutes of Perusu are dedicated to revealing the true nature of Halasayam. This segment embodies a comedy of errors climax, where a series of witty exchanges and interactions among multiple characters are essential to delivering a conclusion that lives up to the film's premise.
Perusu Movie Verdict:
Perusu is an innocuous film that begins on a strong note, experiences some uneven moments in the middle, and concludes satisfactorily. If the film had invested more effort in enhancing its dialogues to better develop its characters and situations, it could have emerged as one of the pioneering successful adult comedies in Tamil cinema. Nonetheless, with its commendable effort and solid performances, the film offers a distinctive viewing experience.
